Let's Sprout

Who doesn’t love mini things? I have a mini stapler that’s just so cute I look for excuses to use it. Even those mini bananas in grocery stores all stacked together. C'mon, cute right? 

 

Where am I going with this? Sprouting!

 

That’s just what sprouts are. Little cute mini things that transform from a dormant seed into a soft, edible, incredibly nutritious, raw, living plant. They are mini baby plants packed with nutritious deliciousness. 

 

So why are they so good for us?

  • They contain all the energy, vitamins, nutrients and power that enables it to be transformed from a small seed into a strong plant.

  • Very alkalizing to the body

  • Have exceptionally high levels of a natural cancer fighting compound called sulforaphane.

  • The abundant enzymes in sprouts makes them easily digestible

  • Mung beans, similar in composition to fruits, are rich in vitamins A, C, and B complex.

A while ago when I heard of sprouting, I put them in the category of fermentation, dehydration and things that seemed like you needed to attend a workshop to learn about it, get all the tools to do it, store them somewhere in your home and never find the time to do it.  

 

Well I was wrong. I’ll focus on how to grow your own Mung beans. They are among the fastest beans and seeds to sprout and you can grow them in as quickly as 2-3 days. Get them at the grocery store, super cheap and easy to find in the bulk section cuz they are green.

 

Promise me you’ll try this at least once! Treat it like a science experiment in elementary school, get curious and if you like - write out the whole Purpose, Hypothesis, Conclusion thing like those science projects we used to do J

 

The Experiment.

 

1.       Rinse 1 cup dry beans until water runs clear.

 

2.       Put them in a mason jar.

 

3.       Fill the jar with water.

 

4.       Say goodnight to them and leave them overnight.

 

5.       Drain all the water

 

6.       Get a mesh cloth (cheese cloth works) and cover the mouth of the jar with it - use an elastic to hold it in place

 

7.       Tilt jar at 45 degree angle, lid facing down.

 

8.       Rinse them 2-3 times/day.

 

9.       Do this 2-4 days or until their cute little tails are the length you like them.

 

10.    Eat them! 

 

11.    You can store them in your fridge - put them in agua and now every time you open the door you have tons of little yummy things just waiting to nourish you.

These can be eaten on their own, used in salads and stir-fry's, blended or juiced into your green drink. Oh - and never eat sprouts that smell off in any way.

 

There is no limit with how you eat these little guys - they just want to put all their goodness into our bodies so they can live their dream and we can get closer to ours!
