All the heath advice out there on how to eat healthy can be overwhelming.
We all know that greens are good for us, we know we should eat more fruit, we know that too much sugar is bad for us. We learn that all it takes is adding more chard to recipes, eating apples for snacks and staying away from caffeine.
So why aren’t we doing it?
For the answer to this question, we have to look deeper within ourselves. I think of the iceberg metaphor. We see the tip of the iceberg which represents what we are eating, what is in our fridge and grocery store bags and what we make or buy for lunch. Because this is what we see with our eyes, it may seem to be the place to work with or to change. However, this is only the visible surface of what lies below.
Beneath the small, exposed tip lies this massive, solid foundation, so grand and spectacular barely visible from the surface. Without this, the tip would not exist. It is this foundation that supports the manifestation of what and how you are eating.
Within this foundation lies the answer to our individual health. This is where each of us can be so entirely different. What is good for you may not be good for me. Why someone drinks six cans of coke per day and someone else will only eat raw comes from entirely different beliefs, values and life experiences. One is not better than the other, it is all manifestations of a deeper self.
I believe that we all already know what we need to be healthy.
To heal yourself or your way of eating, look below the tip of what you see. Let go of controlling yourself from this minute point of yourself. When you see and understand what is below the surface, when you find compassion for the root of yourself, when you accept the softness and vulnerable aspect of yourself, it is then that the tip starts to reveal itself differently.
That is when we suddenly and naturally add chard to recipes and reach for water over coffee. It is when control and obsession begins to fade, it is when enjoyment comes back in.
The act of eating is a way to know who you are. It is a tool towards your best self and health. Use the tip of your iceberg to understand the foundation you lie on.
