I have to admit, I was a teeny bit skeptical of my friend who raved about her homemade deodorant that 'really works'. I've heard that before, a natural deodorant that 'really works'. Over the years I have probably spent a small fortune on natural deodorants that really don't work.
However her vibrant enthusiasm and the simplicity of the process intrigued me so I put it to the test. My armpits smelled last night. Actually I'd go so far as saying that they reeked terribly. So I was going to put this to the ultimate test. (I know, normally deodorant is meant to be put on to prevent the sweat but that's why this was the ultimate test.)
I went to the kitchen, pulled out my sketched notes and got to work. It took all of 5 minutes.
Au Natural Deoderant
6 tbsp coconut oil
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup cornstarch
Mixy mixy altogether and you have your armpit freshener.
I told you this was the ultimate test:
Sam has not particularly loved my natural deodorant journey and has leaned towards encouraging me away from these natural deodorants. But I wasn't ready to give up. He didn't know what I was up to in the kitchen last night, but he had just previously noticed the smell coming from my underarms. Actually, he turned his head away from them in disgust.
I tried to hold my excitement and played it cool as I smeared this stuff on my armpits, sat beside him, lifted my arm and said, "Smell!"
He reluctantly sniffed..... "Coconut?"
BINGO! This shit works.
Skin breathes and absorbs what we put on it. It is the research done on the effects of aluminum in our bodies that steers people away from commercial deodorant as well as its possible link with cancer. Rule of thumb - if you wouldn't eat it, don't smear it on your skin. I'm going to keep testing this through the sunny and warm week we are having and will keep you posted.
Give this a try and stick to your journey of finding the best natural deodorant for you. I think I have finally met my match.
